Your body comes with a pretty remarkable waste management system, cleaning itself from the inside out to keep you healthy. But as you age, that system becomes more prone to blockages and malfunction, leaving damaging waste to pile up inside your cells.
So how do you take the trash out? Resistance training. Challenging your muscles can keep that system strong, helping you stay healthier and stronger for longer.
Let’s explain the science so you can get back to cleaning up – in more ways than one.

Resistance training: the heavyweight champ of autophagy
In the search for ways to boost the body’s repair system, researchers reviewed existing studies on how different forms of exercise can activate autophagy. (More on that below.)
While all forms of exercise have health benefits, the review suggests that long-term resistance training – any form of exercise that requires your body to work against resistance, like lifting weights – could be the best exercise for stimulating autophagy.

Your cellular clean-up crew
Think of autophagy as the ultimate recycling system for your cells. It’s the process by which cells break down and remove unwanted or dysfunctional material they don’t need anymore. And a regular clean-out helps keep cells healthier for longer.
Ingrid demonstrates how to keep it clean with resistance training.
Misbehaving or non-functional cells in the body have recently been labeled one of the hallmarks of aging, but the exact links between aging and autophagy are still unclear. When autophagy is boosted, it seems to mitigate aging. On the flip side, when autophagy is blocked or reduced, aging speeds up.
By reducing damage to cells, autophagy appears to help protect us against neurodegeneration, cancer and diabetes, as well as heart, liver and autoimmune diseases.
In other words, putting those dumbbells to work with a Centr strength workout could be a great boost for your overall longevity.
Make strength your anti-aging weapon
Resistance or strength training is essential for maintaining well-being as you age in more ways than just giving your cells a deep clean. It also:
Increases muscle mass, maintaining a healthy metabolism and preventing fat gain.
Builds stronger, denser bones, preventing age-related bone loss and osteoporosis.
Strengthens joints to keep you pain-free and moving well.
Improves cognitive function for a sharper mind.
- Helps achieve better sleep – which is crucial for maintaining brain health as you age.
