How to start getting results with circuit training

Alexz Parvi

If it brings the intensity, turns up the burn, makes your muscles shake and has a variety of different workouts, I am here for it.

Circuit training is one of the best and most effective ways to build functional strength and dial up your cardio fitness. And that’s exactly why I’ve teamed up with my favorite Luke Zocchi to bring you not one, but two circuit-based programs – Centr Circuit: Elevate and Centr Circuit: Elevate+.

I am going to take this as an opportunity to tell you everything you need to know about getting results with circuit training.

The definition of circuit training

Pull up a mat in my circuit class and let’s get you up to speed.

Circuit training is a high-intensity style of working out and body conditioning that involves performing multiple exercises one after the other with only small rest periods in between.

On Centr, a circuit is made up of 5-10 exercises. And in every circuit workout, you’ll work through multiple circuits or rounds of these exercises. (That’s right, the full workout is a big circuit made up of smaller circuits!)

In a classic circuit training workout, you run through the full set of exercises to complete a circuit or round, then repeat that round.

With Centr Circuit: Elevate and Elevate+, we’re raising the stakes by progressing exercises each round. In the first round you’ll do the base move, in the second we’ll build on it, then in the third we blast that to new heights! So you’ll be leveling up in the space of just one workout.

What are the benefits of circuit training?

Why do I love circuit training? And more importantly, why will YOU love circuit training? Let me break down the benefits for you.

  • It’s efficient. Circuits combine strength and cardio in one session, meaning you can get a workout done in 30 minutes.
  • It delivers full-body action. You’re targeting multiple muscle groups in one workout, building overall strength and toning your entire body.
  • The energy burn is high. If it burns, you know I love it. The variety of exercises in circuit training and minimal rest breaks will have you burning big energy and torching fat.
  • It revs up the cardio. Working fast means getting your heart rate up – so you’re not just burning energy, but building endurance.
  • Consider your boredom busted. You’ll be doing a whole lot of different exercises – and often using different equipment – in one circuit, which makes circuit training a great style for people who find some types of exercise boring.

What’s the verdict on circuit training for fat loss?

If you’ve set a goal to lose fat, the high level of energy burn in circuit training makes it a no-brainer for your workout routine.

It’s not just that heart-spiking pace that helps. Because most circuit workouts also include strength training exercises, you’ll be increasing your body’s ability to burn fat. The more muscle you have, the more fat your body burns, even at rest. Bonus: you’ll also be looking toned and defined, and busting out all that amazing strength in your everyday life!

While we love hitting the workout mat, don’t forget that nutrition is key to fat loss. If you join us for circuit training on Centr, you also get access to our dietitian-approved meal plans – which are tailored to your individual goal.

Is circuit training good for beginners?

Circuit training is a great place to start as a beginner. It will expose you to different exercises, plus you’ll be getting a good mix of cardio and strength training, helping you build a good base of fitness.

Plus, you’re getting a great workout done in a short amount of time.

If you’re about to start your fitness journey, you’ll find plenty of circuit-style workouts on Centr that are designed for beginners, including Centr Unleashed – which doesn’t even require equipment. That’s a win!
