Are you ready for the full backstory? We went straight to Chris Hemsworth and his personal trainer, Luke Zocchi, to learn about this game-changing program, Centr 6.
Q: What’s the story with Centr 6? Tell us how it started.
LZ: Centr 6 all started with Chris.
CH: Training with Luke, I was getting into a rhythm of doing 6 exercises for 6 rounds – and I found it challenging and was really seeing results.
LZ: So we started experimenting with these workouts, which then grew into a group training session every Monday morning. We had a mixed group of about 10 friends do a test run on all these workouts.
CH: We had so much fun training with a group, everyone was getting results, feeling stronger and just having a great time. So we thought, ‘Why not invite all our Centr members, too?’ That’s why I started the program in the first place, to give people access to all the fitness, food and lifestyle knowledge that these experts have shared with me.
Q: How do you adjust this style of workout for Chris to meet different goals?
LZ: When Chris is on the road for a film, his workouts need to be adaptable. For MIB:I, it was very similar training to Centr 6 – we still used dumbbells, but because we were going for a leaner look we did higher rep ranges with lighter weights.
CH: The great thing about the style of strength and cardio training in this program is that whatever your fitness goal, it can take you further down that road.
Q: What’s the weirdest place or the most fun you’ve had doing a Centr 6 style workout?
LZ: The weirdest place we have worked out was in the white sandy desert of Albuquerque, in an old movie trailer when we were filming 12 Strong. We had a set of dumbbells that we shared – while one used the dumbbells the other person would be doing a bodyweight movement.
CH: Yeah, there were no gyms out there! This is why Luke had to come up with a training program that uses minimal equipment.
LZ: And the most fun I have had was doing the real deal Centr 6 workouts with Rulk and Ashley. We filmed them all over a couple of days, so it was hard work, but we had a lot of laughs.
CH: I think that’s what members love about Centr 6: they’ve got you, Ashley and Da Rulk cheering them on and making them laugh every step of the way.
Q: What’s your tip for fueling up for Centr 6, and for topping up for post-workout recovery?
LZ: Best pre-workout fuel is something with carbs! The rule of thumb I stick to is the closer you are to the workout, the smaller the meal. And after training, I’m a huge fan of the Banana Peanut Butter Super Smoothie on Centr.
CH: When I’m in full Thor training mode, there is always a post-workout smoothie – green power shakes are a Sergio special. You can be pretty creative with that but the essential ingredients are spinach, celery, green apple, and a scoop of pea protein.
Q: How important is nutrition for pushing your body to be stronger and better?
LZ: You won’t reach your goals with workouts alone. Whether you’re putting on muscle or losing fat, you need to support that training with the right nutrition. We’ve made it super simple for the Centr 6 program because you can just stick to the meal plan for your goal.
CH: I've found that there’s not one essential ingredient to reaching my health and fitness goals, it’s all three – how I move, what I put in my body, and mindfulness – working together and helping me find balance. Centr takes a holistic view: Train, Eat, Live.
Q: After 6 days of crushing your Centr 6 workouts, what’s the best thing you can do on a rest day to help your body recover?
LZ: Just keep moving, but with way less intensity, even if it’s just a walk. Doing nothing at all can make you even more sore and stiff.
Why is now a good time to start Centr 6?
LZ: Because these workouts are fun, you can do them at home, they’re always changing and even if you don't have any equipment at home you can still take part. The only equipment we use is dumbbells – and if you don't have those, grab some cans or water bottles and get to it! Most of all, they work and get results.
CH: Centr 6 is designed to make fitness accessible to everyone. I hope it shows that reaching your goals doesn’t have to be complicated.
